Urban mobility challenges have never been new to Delhi. Since the past few decades, the city has developed several road widening projects, flyovers, and metro corridors for solving the congestion problems, but none of them were initiated on such a large scale and to such a large extent as Urban Extension Road ii. As it is remembered in recent history to have been the largest ring road project for Delhi, UER II is now at the threshold of developing a crucial phase.
Beyond its main function, which is decongesting arterial roads, UER II will create a ripple effect in areas like real estate, logistics, and retail. The highway enhances regional accessibility and spurs high-potential property corridors.
This expressway is a turning point in the narrative on infrastructure and urban development in the capital.
Urban Extension Road ii: A Long-Awaited Solution to Delhiās Traffic Woes
Interestingly, this idea of UER II isn't originally new; it was first suggested by the DDA in the early 2000s in their Delhi Master Plan 2021. However, the idea fell through on numerous counts, mainly because of issues related to land acquisition and raising finances. Hence, it was only on paper for years.
A breath of fresh air has come to this project in 2018, when it was officially handed over to NHAI, and also a commitment of ā¹4,000 crore was made by DDA as viability gap funding so that this project could finally progress.

To ensure the effective carrying out of the construction, the entire project is segregated into parts. Each particular segment is given to specialized contractors through a bidding process.
This first phase takes three construction packages. The initial stretch comprises NH1 up to Karala-Kanjhawala Road, awarded to HG Infra Engineering. The second of these is the joint venture between Ceigall India and Krishna Constructions, by which this road stretches from Karala-Kanjhawala Road through to Nangloi-Najafgarh. Gawar Constructions and ES Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. are handling the third stretch of Phase 1, which links Nangloi-Najafgarh Road to Dwarkaās Sector 24.
More work is envisaged beyond Phase 1 at the two spur roads. There is a lot of interest being shown by various bidders in the Sonipat spur passing from Bawana to Barwasni Bypass, and Ram Kumar Contractor has got the bid as the lowest. The same applies to the Bahadurgarh spur, having a connection from Dichaun Kalan to the Bahadurgarh Bypass, which will be constructed through a joint venture between SS Builders and Diamond Construction Co.
A 7.5 km stretch of UER II runs along the under-construction Dwarka Expressway. This part is being developed by J Kumar Infraprojects.

- Regional Linkages: Accessibility beyond borders will be enhanced, with improved cross-border connections into the neighboring areas of Haryana through Sonipat and Bahadurgarh spurs.
UER 2 Construction Update, Status & Completion Date
According to recent updates, the UER II construction update shows that the project is progressing at regular intervals, with December 2024 set as the targeted UER 2 completion date. Construction work has progressed in many areas, while some stretches are still under land acquisition processes.
Given high priority under its project pipeline with NHAI, monitoring of the expressway development for timely delivery has been undertaken.
Future Development Plans: UER 2 Phase 2
The journey indeed doesn't stop at phase 1 but has plans in the pipeline for UER 2 phase 2, under the aegis of the Delhi Government. Phase II aims to deepen the connectivity in South Delhi. Some noteworthy projects include the relocation of the Rangpuri Bypass to Vasant Kunj and the upgrading of Nelson Mandela Marg to Andheria Mor, along with building high-level interchanges at Andheria Mor and the Anuvrat Marg/Mehrauli-Badarpur Road intersection.
Also included in this pack is widening, raising, and introducing another elevated corridor along sections of NH-2, which experience very high traffic congestion-prone conditions, along with the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road.
Phase II will transform the traffic situation entirely in South Delhi when it ends. And with that, it expects to give much better accessibility to the city's interior.
